Hey there! I am a freelance science writer working out of Athens, Georgia. I write about complicated concepts for a general audience. When someone reads something I wrote, I want them to think about it all day, tell somebody about it over lunch, take time to find out more. I spend a lot of time thinking about how to explain something to my mom.
My writing voice is animated and even funny, but not at the expense of the content. I have plenty of experience pitching stories, working on tight deadlines, and turning an assignment around quickly. Writing can be solitary, and I'm a talker, so my favorite research method is picking up the phone and calling an expert. I am not a shy person.
Freelance writing isn't always easy, but I do it because I like waking up in the morning and learning something new. I am a dream to work with: I'm flexible and a good communicator, and I feel comfortable explaining subjects ranging from fracking to quantum mechanics to Egyptology.
Most of my professional experience has been in writing scripts for educational videos, but in the past year I have branched out to print journalism. Here are a few of my clients and some examples of my work:
How Stuff Works NOW is an online science news resource that synthesizes new science research for a general audience. I write about everything from Prozac in our waterways to mysterious Neolithic cave paintings to how fear works in an ecosystem.
SciShow is a popular science YouTube Show hosted by Hank Green. I have written over 100 scripts for the show's educational videos, including 3 of the 10 most popular videos on the channel: The Science of Lying, The Science of Overpopulation, Why Sexy is Sexy.
Here are some of the scripts I'm most proud of:
Crash Course Biology is an educational YouTube series from 2012 hosted by Hank Green. The goal of the series was to present the information covered in an AP Biology course in 40 10-minute episodes, covering topics from taxonomy to biological molecules to the evolution of plants and animals. The videos have been viewed 8.5 million times YouTube, and the series was picked up by Khan Academy. I wrote the scripts for 37 of the 40 episodes, beginning with episode #4, Eukaryopolis - The city of animal cells.
Crash Course Ecology is a similar YouTube Series covering the basic tenets of Ecology in 12 videos. I wrote the scripts for all episodes, which have been viewed 1.5 million times and also rereleased by Khan Academy.
